PORT Lighting installed a custom all-white dead-hung pipe grid on Level 52 of View Boston at the Prudential Center in Boston, creating flexible overhead infrastructure for seasonal art installations, scenic elements, lighting, and future event activations.
At the top of Boston’s Prudential Center, View Boston gives visitors a sweeping perspective of the city. But as the attraction continues to evolve, the team identified an opportunity to make Level 52 more flexible, more engaging, and better equipped for seasonal programming.
PORT Lighting’s current project focused on one key piece of that evolution: a custom all-white dead-hung pipe grid designed to support seasonal art installations, scenic elements, lighting, and future event activations.
The result is a clean, architectural infrastructure system that can help the space change over time without requiring a new support solution for every installation.
The Challenge
View Boston needed a flexible overhead support system that could blend into the space while giving the attraction more options for future programming.
The infrastructure had to be strong, safe, and adaptable. It also had to respect the look of the observation floor, where every detail is visible against the backdrop of the Boston skyline.
The installation came with several constraints. The Prudential Tower dates back to the 1960s, and the available concrete drawings were hand-drawn. There were no modern CAD files or complete structural records to simplify the process. The team also had to work around existing mechanical systems, sprinklers, speakers, lights, and unusually large ceiling tiles.
Because View Boston remained open during the day, all work had to happen overnight. Each shift required careful setup, installation, cleanup, and reset before guests returned the next morning.
The Solution
PORT installed a custom dead-hung pipe grid measuring approximately 125 feet by 25 feet. The grid was installed on one side of Level 52 and designed as long-term infrastructure for future seasonal art, scenic, lighting, and event needs.
Every visible hardware element was custom painted white to create a clean, cohesive appearance. Instead of looking temporary or industrial, the grid was designed to feel integrated into the architecture.
Alignment was also a major part of the installation. The grid was carefully positioned to line up with the window mullions both horizontally and vertically, preserving the visual rhythm of the space and keeping the installation intentional.
Built Around Real-World Constraints
The project required a practical approach to engineering and logistics.
Because the building’s original structural documentation was limited, PORT selected anchors and spacing carefully and performed rigorous load testing to verify safety.
Transporting materials added another challenge. Elevator limitations meant pipe could only be brought up in 12-foot lengths, so each section had to be custom cut and spliced for installation.
All work was completed overnight to avoid disrupting daily operations. Crews aimed to finish by 7:00 a.m. so the attraction could open at 10:00 a.m. as scheduled. Corderman & Company, Inc., the general contractor, supported site preparation and protection, while a dedicated mechanical area helped the team store equipment between shifts.
The Result
The finished pipe grid gives View Boston a flexible infrastructure platform for future creative programming.
For the summer showcase, a scenic company used the new overhead support system to install a string-based art piece. While PORT did not install the scenic strings, the pipe grid made the installation possible by giving the space a reliable, adaptable framework.
More importantly, the grid was not designed for a single moment. It was created to support ongoing change.
With this infrastructure in place, View Boston can refresh seasonal art, add lighting elements, support scenic treatments, and adapt the space for events without starting from scratch each time.
Relationship Context
This current project focused specifically on the custom dead-hung pipe grid. However, it also reflects PORT Lighting’s broader relationship with View Boston and the Prudential Center.
Over time, PORT has supported the property through separate service calls, lighting repairs, lighting control work, integrations, and exterior lighting support. That previous experience gave the team valuable familiarity with the building, the attraction, and the operational needs of both ownership and the venue team.
That context helped PORT approach the pipe grid installation with a clear understanding of the site, the schedule, and the importance of working cleanly in an active guest environment.
Why It Matters
Modern observation attractions need to offer more than a view. They need to create reasons for visitors to return, attend events, take photos, and experience the space in new ways.
At View Boston, the custom pipe grid helps make that possible.
By creating flexible overhead infrastructure within an active, architecturally sensitive environment, PORT helped give Level 52 room to evolve. The grid is intentionally understated, but what it supports can become a highly visible part of the guest experience.
