Shining a Light on Friends in Action: Fostering Inclusive Communities in New Hampshire

At PORT Lighting, our Illuminating Impact campaign celebrates organizations that make a meaningful difference in our communities. This month, we're proud to highlight Friends in Action, a nonprofit based in Durham, NH, dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities through inclusive social and recreational programs.

Building Connections Through Inclusive Programs

Founded in 2000 as the Friends Project, Friends in Action emerged from a collaboration between the Portsmouth School Department and a group of parents seeking to address the social isolation often experienced by individuals with developmental disabilities. By 2012, the initiative evolved into an independent nonprofit, expanding its reach to over 100 families across 50 towns in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

The organization's mission is clear: to create opportunities for friendship, laughter, companionship, and community connections. Through a variety of programs, Friends in Action ensures that participants have meaningful friendships, engaging activities, and a sense of belonging.

Diverse Programs Promoting Engagement and Growth

Friends in Action offers a wide array of programs designed to cater to diverse interests and promote personal growth:

  • Wildcat Friends: A unique program providing adults with developmental disabilities a college experience at the University of New Hampshire, including dining, recreation, and interest-based classes.

  • Echo Thrift Shop: Participants volunteer alongside UNH students and community members, gaining valuable work experience and fostering community engagement.

  • Recreational Activities: From basketball and bowling to theater classes and Friday Night Socials, these activities promote physical health, creativity, and social interaction.
