Illuminating Impact: Meet Our May Winner Yoga In Action!
We’re excited to announce our May Illuminating Impact winner, Yoga In Action!
Yoga in Action is a nonprofit providing free and accessible yoga programs to Maine and New Hampshire communities. Their mission is to provide the opportunity to individuals to realize their power to connect, transform, heal and thrive through yoga. They create accessibility to this form of therapeutic movement and meditation by eliminating any financial or social barriers, as well as adapting for those who face physical barriers.
How Yoga In Action Creates Accessibility to Healing and Movement
Yoga in Action is founded on the belief that yoga is for everyone. Their specialized classes are made to be available to people of all backgrounds, identities, financial situations, and diverse abilities. Those facing addiction, physical barriers, mental health, and healing from trauma are all supported through Yoga in Action's programs. Yoga in Action's instructors use inclusive language and practices to create a safe space for all. Programs are also available for those who are hard of hearing or deaf, as well as virtual programs for those who cannot attend in-person classes.
Connect: To foster community, Yoga in Action provides free yoga classes for veterans, seniors, and the general public as a whole. Classes include chair yoga, just breathe yoga, free yoga for veterans and more.
Transform: To aid in recovery, Yoga in Action partners with outside agencies, such as Triangle Club and Hope on Haven Hill, to bring healing through yoga to those who are facing substance abuse issues, mental health struggles, and trauma. Yoga in Action instructors are also trauma-informed and highly trained / certified.
Heal: Yoga in Action provides specialized classes for those newly diagnosed with cancer, in cancer treatment, surgical recovery or in remission. Oncologists, caregivers, and oncology nurses are also encouraged to come. These classes focus on improving relaxation and mobility, as well as relieving tension through flexibility and strength improvement.
Thrive: Yoga in Action provides classes for those with diverse abilities, both adults and children. Adaptive mat or chair yoga is available for disabled individuals. Disabilities accommodated include, but are not limited to, traumatic brain injury, developmental, intellectual, and physical challenges.
