Lighting Upgrades for High Schools: What to Know Before You Renovate

GOEL CENTER THRUST STAGE THEATER LIGHTING

At PORT, we know that things come up when running a school auditorium, from budget restrictions to safety concerns, and wanting to have the best performance for a cost-effective price. Just because these obstacles exist, doesn't mean that your theater can't be in peak condition. In this guide, we'll go through everything you need to know before renovating an auditorium, ranging from the absolute necessities, to the upgrades that will transform your space within your price point.

What to Know About Your Auditorium Beforehand

Before speaking with a lighting & rigging company, it is important to know some facts about your auditorium.

  • Size of the stage
  • Heights of different features of the auditorium (ex. curtain height)
  • What type of equipment you have
  • Venue specific details (what do you use your auditorium specifically for; ex. theatrical programs)
  • Manufacturers Name
  • Age of System

It's okay to not know every detail off the top of your head. When you are not sure, photos are always helpful!

The Bare Necessities: Safety, Safety, and Safety

It's easy to get behind on safety. The most important part of upgrading your auditorium is making sure that the space is non-hazardous to teachers, employees, guests, and students. It is always better to deal with a small cost now, then risk getting a child or someone else hurt later. By getting your annual rigging inspection done, you can rest easy that your auditorium is up to code, and any costs that comes with safety updates can be spread out over time, instead of all at once. Visual inspections can also help you determine what needs to be fixed. Common lighting issues found in high schools include:

  • Old conventional fixtures containing asbestos
  • Decaying cables
  • Splintered and cracked rubber insulation
  • Fire hazards (often comes from something that emits heat or odd smell such as melting electrical outlets)
  •  Light bulbs that have gone out

If you are not sure what the current safety codes are, no need to worry! The company you work with on your lighting and rigging should be up to date on current ANSI and OSHA codes.

Peak Performance for Price: The Magic of Modern LEDs

Whether you use your theater mainly for orchestra, assemblies, music, or drama programs, updated lighting can be tailored to fit your needs. Modern LED fixtures are able to run a wide variety of color programs. Examples of these include:

  • Full Color for Musicals
  • White Light for Orchestras
  • Specials for Assemblies / Theater Performances

Not only do LEDs create aesthetic visuals, but also are amazing for performance and maintenance. LEDs are permanent fixtures, they do not require lamps to be replaced like older fixtures do. Some of the ways that LEDs can save your school money while delivering stunning illumination include:

  • Requiring less energy: LEDs significantly lower your energy bill compared to incandescent lights
    • Bonus! Less energy means less heat, keeping your performers and audiences cooler
  • No need to buy extra features: LEDs run a variety of colors, limiting the number of fixtures you need to purchase
  • Money Saver on House Lights: House lights typically run all day; with incandescent lights that means getting the bulbs replaced 3-5x a year
